The lawn at the summer cottage is a landscape element that has replaced vegetable gardens, flower beds and gardens. Choose lawn leveling rake. Despite the seeming simplicity of the lawn itself, and this is just sown grass that needs to be mowed periodically, this is actually a serious ecological system with its own rules and requirements. Therefore, in this article we will talk about how to properly level the area for a lawn, how to form the soil, what points and nuances you need to pay special attention to in order to guarantee the high quality of the lawn coverage.
Principles of preparing a plot for a lawn
Everyone knows what a lawn is. In fact, this is part of the territory of a suburban area where special-purpose grass is sown. It is called that – lawn. The grass grows with low shoots, which must be mowed every 2 weeks. It is this smooth appearance of the grassy area that gives the suburban area a presentable appearance.
But achieving evenness is the difficulty of creating a lawn. The area where the grass is sown should be one level sufficient. There are certain assumptions and errors, but they are insignificant and do not exceed 2 cm per one meter of the leveled surface length.
At the same time, it is necessary to ensure good growth of the plantation. That is, the grass should not only grow well, the stems should be juicy, of good color, densely packed next to each other. And to achieve this, it is necessary to carry out a number of activities:
- ensure soil drainage so that water does not linger on the site under the lawn;
- distribute fertile soil on top , which will ensure good plant growth;
- to compact the soil and soil , because most often the lawn is the area on which it is recommended to walk, that is, to load;
- create an irrigation system that will be responsible for watering the grass cover.
It should be noted that the very process of forming a lawn begins with cleaning the territory. That is, they remove all plants except trees and shrubs, which must be formed (cut) for landscape design. And, of course, they level the land for the lawn.
The lawn can be broken not only on horizontal sites. Inclined planes are also suitable, the main thing is that the surface prepared for sowing lawn grass is without pits, bumps, grooves and other soil flaws. Therefore, it is necessary to align the plane of the plot.
If the area for the lawn is small, then all activities related to leveling can be carried out manually using a rake and shovels. If you plan to plant lawn grass over a large area, then you cannot do without equipment.
How are the measures for leveling the site for planting carried out:
- first , the marking is carried out, for which pegs and twine are most often used ;
- the designated area is being cleaned ;
- then backfill the fertile layer with its compaction is carried out, an important point is the thickness of the compacted soil – 14-16 cm;
- carry out the leveling of the soil layer in order to achieve maximum evenness of the site.
Everything seems to be simple. But this is just a list of ongoing work, each of which has its own nuances. For example, after cleaning the site from debris and vegetation, it is necessary to remove the fertile soil layer and lay it near the future lawn. Please note that in this state, the land can be stored for no more than one month. After a long aging period, harmful bacteria and insects grow in it.
After that, the soil is leveled. Special attention should be paid to the pits, which may have to be covered with additionally imported soil. Pay attention to the soil itself. If it is very dense, then it is worth digging up the area using shovels or other mechanical devices and devices. After digging, alignment is imperative.
Now you need to add the fertile soil layer that was previously removed. To apply it evenly to the area, it is recommended to drive wooden pegs under the lawn throughout the area so that they stick out above the ground at the same height. This can be achieved by using a laser building level as the simplest modern option.
At the next stage, soil is applied to the entire site. It must be leveled over the hammered pegs using a rake. In this state, the earth is left for natural shrinkage. This usually takes a couple of weeks.
After the soil has settled, it is necessary to check how compacted it is – whether the hammered pegs protrude above the ground. If this happens, then the soil is supplemented, leveling along the marks. Do not forget that for the lawn it is necessary to maintain a slight slope – 1-2 °, for the water to drain (rain or melt). Then the pegs are removed, and the soil is compacted with a metal roller.
This process is best done in dry, calm weather. In this case, it is necessary to roll the ground in two perpendicular directions in order to thus avoid the appearance of air pockets in the ground. And the last stage is the collection of stones, roots and other debris that ended up in the soil. The area intended for the lawn is necessarily checked by the level.
The optimum angle of inclination of the area where the lawn is planned to be laid should not exceed 25 °. The leveling of a summer cottage for a lawn located on a slope of more than 25 ° is carried out as follows:
- first of all, the fertile layer is removed , which is transferred to temporary storage near the site;
- then the soil layer located in the upper part of the slope is transferred to the lower parts , where it is leveled and evenly distributed ;
- the main task of the contractor is to reduce the angle of inclination .
In this case, it is recommended to form a terrace at the bottom of the slope. For this, a curb is erected at the bottom of the slope. This could be an earthen embankment, although there are different options. The main thing is that the border must be strong and reliable. After that, a ditch is dug along the curb, the purpose of which is to drain rain and melt water, as well as excess irrigation. Therefore, the ditch is dug at a slope towards the drain.
Now everything is the same as in the previous case. Thus, the fertile layer is removed, part of the soil from the upper part of the slope is transferred to the lower one, the terrace is filled. And the last one is filling the slope and terrace with soil, which was previously removed from the slope.
Revival of the lawn
Often there are situations when the owners of a suburban area start the lawn. Grass grows on it to its full height, weeds, uneven ground and so on have appeared. Revitalizing a lawn is not easy. In fact, you have to redo everything all over again, which takes a lot of time. Here it is important to properly level the old section of the lawn under the new lawn.
In fact, the old lawn is located in an area that was once leveled. But under the influence of natural stress, he gradually lost both his evenness and his fertility. A littered area requires almost one operation – digging. This process is classified with two digging forks: single and double-deck.
